About Us

The picture to the left was taken back in the fall of 1994. Those are my father's hands in that picture, setting a brick in a chimney we were building out in Coleman County. Those are the hands that started Lucero Masonry, and ours are the invisible ones that work hard to keep it going.

I never met a craftsman who loved his trade more than Tino Lucero, my dad, loved his. Raised a poor farm boy in Southeastern New Mexico, he met his true calling in that part of the country when he hired on as a brick mason’s helper for a local contractor. Years ago when I asked him how he got into the trade, he said, I knew I wanted to be a bricklayer from the first time I saw a brick put in that wall.”

Although Dad started out as a bricklayer, he had learned to lay stone early. He grew to love stone more and more when he moved into Central Texas, where stone is a very popular building material and can be found in abundance. Whether he was working with brick or stone, his philosophy about it was simple, straightforward, and sincere, “Do it right or don’t do it at all.” and, he meant what he said. Although he hired many masons and trained even more, including my three brothers and me, most wouldn’t stick around for long. My father was a perfectionist and I have seen many a brick and stone pulled off a wall, then put back on, by men who’s first attempt didn’t quite pass his inspection.

Maybe it is because I was his son and already knew what he expected, or maybe it is because I have the same passion for the trade that he had, but I don’t recall ever having to tear down my work because it didn’t pass his inspection. Truth is, if I ever do work that I'm not pleased with, I tear it down and redo it myself until I feel it's right . I’m my own worst critic, just as he was. That is why the end result was, and still is, quality work done with pride.

After my father passed away in December 2001, I stepped in to run Lucero Masonry. Our focus hasn’t changed. We love what we do and do our best to provide top quality work to please our customers. This web site was created to honor my father and his love for the masonry trade, and we hope to carry on with the same passion he had for his work. Thanks for taking the time to visit Lucero Masonry.
